Racing at Bolsterstone

October 8, 2017

As the weather starts to turn autumnal, skateboarders use every opportunity to get outside.  The SP8BOARDS race team is no exception and they turned out in force to try their hand at the Bolsterstone Outlaw event.

Held every year in the middle of September and organised by Oscar Taylor of the BLBB, the Bolsterstone Outlaw takes place amidst spectacular scenery in the long, curving hills of the peak district.  This is a popular area for SP8BOARDS. They often meet here (with anyone who wants to join them) to skate the foothills.

This time however, Andy and Dreek were going from the top of the hill in the luge event.

The course is about 600 metres long with a long straight after the finish line - ideal for slowing down!!!

It has ultra smooth tarmac, making it probably one of the best surfaces on the circuit. Immediately after the start, you go into a 90 degree left turn and onto the steepest part of the hill. Next comes a sweeping 90 degree right turn and a short straight before a left hand chicane. A little steep bit, a long straight, a left kink and then an easy right turn brings you to the finish.

As usual they were riding SP8BOARDS luge decks. The practice runs went OK except for the second run when Andy hit a serious wobble on the chicane

Fortunately, confidence wasn’t dented and the SP8BOARDS team managed to secure  1st and 2nd places in the event.  This isn’t as spectacular as it sounds as there were only three competitors.  However, the third competitor was tough to beat and anyway, it was the first trophy brought home. More importantly, it gave Andy third overall place in the year’s final rankings of the British Downhill Skateboarding League, a great achievement especially in the first year of racing.

Any excuse for a celebration!

SP8BOARDS were also thrilled to welcome a new member to their team. Andy Senior joined the Open Downhill event to participate in his very first race. He managed to finish in one piece (no mean feat given the size of the hill) and notched up his first competitive points.

All in all a fantastic day.

The SP8BOARDS race team will make their next outing at the Hogtoberfest at Hog Hill on 15/16 October.
